Backgorund and Objectives

“Have you seen Cape No. 7?”- A very popular question which people in Taiwan frequently ask each other. The hot sale of Taiwanese movie “Cape No. 7”has shown the history and energy of Taiwan.

In the history of Taiwan, from the prehistory era, the occupation of Dutch, Ming, Qing, Japan, until the democracy era, Taiwan should face itself from reviewing into the history and scoping into the future.

As the knowledgeable of this land, we cannot only do what we are interested in and avoid knowing or seeing the people, matters, or things of this land nor not to care about the past, present and future.

We must be aware that we cannot exclude ourselves from this land nor leave apart from her. As well educated scholars, we have the responsibility to attend, record, research, and analyze the footprints of our ancestors. Using the theory and research method that we learned from the western literature and culture to contrast and record the history as well as to excavate, discover, and to keep tract of Taiwan. Finally, present what we found to the international academic circle by the global languages in which we are good at.

From the caring of this land and the developed western postcolonial discussions, the center looks forward to expand its view from the field of history, literature, languages…etc to contrast and compare the culture and history of different postcolonial experiences globally; and to discuss issues such as identity and cultural integration in order to look into the future and think for the correlation and position under the global frame of individual, ethnic group, and nation after depart from governance of colonization.

Mean while, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature hired four new literature teachers. They are specialized in Diaspora, identity, Scotland literature, Ireland literature, Joyce, 自我放逐 and identity, and also Diaspora and culture disjunction phenomena within Western literature and Chinese literature. Because I have been teaching British literature for a very long time and also caring and reading Taiwan related issues, I come to understand the fixed developmental model between island and continent (Europe vs. England, China vs. Taiwan) and care about the future development of Taiwan. Moreover, on August I take the responsibility and became chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature again; facing trials from the evaluation of the department, I had to integrate all the resource of research and lead the colleagues to overcome difficulties. Due to the reasons mentioned above, we joined all our human resource and create an interdisciplinary, interdepartmental, and inter-institution academic communication platform naming “Postcolonial Research Center”.

Research for the latecomers and record the forgotten culture and history after war. 此有鑑於information diversity and generalization of foreign culture, young learners of the generation are forgetting or omitting Taiwan local history. In order to lengthen and pass down Taiwanese culture, the research center is established to study post colonial’s phenomena and culture of the world and Taiwan.
