Professor Yueh-miao Chen
The Interactive Orbit between Island and Continent: Continental Europe vs. London and Continental Asia vs. Taiwan

Associate Professor Junko Ono

History or Herstory—Narrating the Nation in the Novels of Elizabeth Bowen and Kate O’Brien
In the process of constructing a national identity since the nineteenth century, history has been a battlefield of inscription for different factions of Irish nationalists.  The Gaelic Athletic Association and the Gaelic League propose an Ireland rooted in the rural authentic Gaelic tradition. Yeats’s Irish Literary Theatre, on the other hand, traces the history of Ireland further back to the ancient Celtic past, a time when the division between Catholics and Protestants did not exist. While intellectuals and artists compete to make up the jigsaw puzzle of Irish history, which is torn to pieces under British colonization, they intentionally rule out some pieces from their picture.  As James Joyce mocks at the Citizen’s version of Ireland as being chauvinistic, ethnocentric and mythical, not-Irish and not-male history is absent from their version.  Little attention has been paid to the history of the Anglo-Irish Aristocracy and the role of Irish women in the emerging Irish nation. Elizabeth Bowen and Kate O’Brien, two women writers with different backgrounds, provide separate but complementary pieces for the picture of Irish history. Bowen, the last heir to the Aristocratic estate, tells a story of the rise and fall of the Aristocracy from her own experience. O’Brien, an Irish woman educated in a Catholic convent, is concerned about Irish women’s experiences in a nation dominated by Catholic doctrines. This project aims at examining the story of the Irish nation told through the two authors’ portrait of the relation between female protagonists and their family, community, and the nation.  Instead of directly dealing with wars and politics, their novels implicitly unveil the turmoil of their time through the eyes of female protagonists inside the wall of a room, a house, or a church. This way of perception signals both their distance from and personal tie to the outer world. Given the fact that history has been a contentious issue in Irish literature, this project intends to provide another facet, previously an obliterated one, of Irish history.

Assistant Professor Shao-Ming Kung
Spacial Translation and National Identity in Postcolonial Indian Diaspora Literature

Professor Baochai Chiang
Post-colonialism and Taiwanese Literature Research

“Interdisciplinary and imaginary subjectivity in Taiwan culture, literature, and cinema”
The proposal is aimed at translating English articles related to imaginary subjectivity in Taiwan Postcolonial/female studies from a transcultural and interdisciplinary perspective. The articles selected for translation are mainly written by outstanding Sinologists or professors in English speaking countries with various academic disciplines. The Chinese translations after publication for the public will not only expand Chinese readers' vision from the local to the global but also serve as stimulation for academic dialogues across the Pacific Ocean.
